General : A Decade Ago, in A Building Not that Far Away....
Posted by SupeRaven on 12/08/2010 at 00:00:30 (640 reads)

This one night I was working the 5 PM to 2 AM shift doing tech support for a telecommunications company. It was pretty boring. My co-workers and I would find all sorts of stuff you occupy our time, including one guy that would bring in his guitar to practice. So since I got free web hosting through work I decided to start a site. I got hosting setup and spent a couple days thinking of a domain. Finally on Friday, December 8, 2000 I registered SuperComputerGeek.com.

Over the past decade Super Computer Geek has gone through 3 or 4 iterations. The current iteration has been the longest though. Hopefully before SCG's 11th anniversary gets here a new iteration based upon Drupal will be rolled out. I've only been working on it for a year.

To those who have been visiting, thank you for participating and contributing. Those [SCG]-ers on Steam may have noticed a copy of Aliens Vs. Predator (2010) show up in your library recently, consider that a small thanks. Hopefully you'll enjoy it.

One decade down...

Gaming : EA/DICE Releases Another Old Game as a New Free Game
Posted by SupeRaven on 11/05/2010 at 10:42:08 (521 reads)

EA/DICE announced a new "freemium" Battlefield game. Battlefield Play4Free appears to be Battlefield 2 in a new engine, possibly a version of Frostbite. Frostbite is the engine used in Battlefield 1943, Bad Company 2, parts of the new Medal of Honor. The trailer shows game play on a map that appears to be Karkand from Battlefield 2. In addition all of the vehicles appear to be the same as Battlefield 2.

EA/DICE anticipates launching the game next Spring (2011). They also announced a beta may begin as soon as November 30.

Take a look for yourself:

Remember when EA/DICE had original ideas?

How come we have not learned anything from WarGames or The Terminator? We continue to attempt to automate systems that should be controlled by critical thinking. How is it we've allowed out financial markets to be controlled by machines. Machines running buggy, unreliable code?

Recently two Norwegian day traders were convicted of market manipulation for exploiting flaws in the algorithms of the Timber Hill trading system. The pair were able to predict how the prices of stocks and commodities traded by the system would react to engineered trades the pair made.

Norwegian Day Traders Convicted For Manipulating Computer Trading System

While the sentencing for the two wasn't harsh, it still seems unfair compared to the charges brought against Timber Hill. By that I mean the absence of charges against Timber Hill. Just as with the "flash crash" of the US market earlier this year, nothing is being done to the people responsible creating the real problem.

If the stocks and commodities were material items and these automated trading systems caused physical damage, say like a defective vehicle, the regulators and politicians would be all over the creators of these systems. Unfortunately though nothing happens to the creators, even though their systems can do considerably more damage than a defective vehicle and have far reaching repercussions.

Does putting a computer in charge of our nuclear arsenal seem wise? No, we know this already. Does putting a bunch of computers controlled by software written by "God knows who" and tested minimally in charge of the trading of world markets seem wise? If answered yes, I have a classic Ford Pinto you may be interested in purchasing.
